Actress returns in a new type of role in ‘Moby Dick’

Actress Kim Min-hee has returned in a new type of role in the movie “Moby Dick,” set for release on June 9.

Kim, who debuted in 1999 with the drama “School 2,” now hopes to broaden the work of her 12-year acting career by playing a wider variety of characters. Her previous roles have been pretty, bubbly characters in romantic comedies.

In her latest movie, she plays a reporter investigating a mysterious explosion. The movie depicts reporters digging up information about the incident in a suburban area near Seoul. Hwang Jeong-min and Jin Goo co-star as reporters.

“I tried to support the main character (Hwang) as much as possible in the movie. And it made the movie turn out better,” Kim said.

Kim’s character seems cold and blunt, but is committed to getting a scoop as a rookie reporter. She observed reporters to experience their work before shooting the movie, but didn’t want to depend too much on research and quit her observations after a day.

“I didn’t want to set a role model for my role in the movie and I just caught the feeling of reporters and tried to do (something) differently from ordinary reporters,” Kim explained.

Kim’s previous movie is “Actresses,” taken in 2009 with top Korean actresses such as Koh Hyung-jeong, Choi Ji-woo and she plans to do another thriller movie “Freighter Car” this coming July.

Kim has led fashion trends and her outfits have always received attention wherever she goes. But, in the new movie, she is not portrayed as pretty. “It’s not really important to look beautiful in the movie. I just want to look like the character,” she said.

Her next role in the movie “Freighter Car” requires another change from her previous image. In the movie, she is to play a woman who disappears before her wedding day, and shocks her fianc with unexpected and terrifying stories.

“I feel the time goes by very fast, although I feel my acting career hasn’t really started. I want to achieve more and I want to grow as an actress who can express a variety of emotions and characters,” she said.
