“Please Look After Mom,” the English edition of a Korean novel by Shin Kyung-sook, is climbing the bestseller list of the New York Times, setting a new record in Korean literature.
The book ranked 21st in the hardcover fiction category of NYT’s bestseller list to be released on April 24, said KL Management, which handles the book’s copyright.
The ranking is based on total sales from April 3-9. Shin’s book has been on the list since first being included five days after publication.
“This is the first time a Korean book has made it into the New York Times’ bestseller list,” said KL Management’s president Joseph Lee.
“Please Look After Mom” is the story of a family going in search of “mom” who goes missing in a busy subway station.
The translated book, recently recommended by Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine, is already in its fifth printing in the U.S. on the strength of rising popularity.
