Paraguay beats Japan in penalty shootout

Paraguay beat Japan 5-3 in a penalty shootout to advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time.

All five of Paraguay’s shooters made their penalties in Pretoria, South Africa. Yuichi Komano hit the crossbar with the third of four Japan attempts.

The round-of-16 game went to the shootout after finishing 0-0 in regulation time and 30 extra minutes.

Paraguay will play Spain or Portugal, who meet later today, in the final eight on July 3.
