Govt., party officials to meet over summit, economy Wednesday

June 19, 2018 - 14:41 By Yonhap
The ruling Democratic Party said Tuesday that senior officials from the party, the government and the presidential office will hold a meeting the next day to discuss follow-up measures to last week's US-North Korea summit.

They will also discuss ways to stabilize the livelihoods of ordinary people and the government's policy on the minimum wage at a meeting to be held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday at a parliamentary building.

The meeting comes after the DP's landslide victory in the June 13 local elections and parliamentary by-elections that set the stage for President Moon Jae-in's drive for reforms and peace.

The three groups plan to discuss follow-up measures to the US-North Korea summit and two rounds of inter-Korean summits, party officials said.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a historic summit in Singapore last Tuesday. The two Koreas also plan to hold Red Cross talks Friday to prepare for reunions of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

Key economic and labor issues will be also dealt with, officials noted.

They will discuss ways to minimize the fallout of the passage of a revised wage bill that will include some regular bonuses and welfare allowances into the calculation of the legal minimum wage.

Labor umbrella groups are fiercely opposing to the new bill.

They plan to check a new shorter work-hour system ahead of its implementation next month. Companies with 300 employees or over should reduce the maximum work week to 52 hours from the current 68 hours beginning July 1.(Yonhap)
