Nov. 13, 2017 - 13:51 By Yonhap

South Korea's military is keeping its full combat readiness against North Korea's possible provocations as the North's soldiers are preparing for their monthslong winter training, the South's military said Monday.

Signs have been detected that North Korea's military is preparing for winter drills that will begin in December, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Usually, the North's winter training runs until April.

"Currently, the North Korean troops are conducting ordinary field exercises. But our military is keeping a full readiness posture against the possibility of North Korea's provocations," a military official said in a briefing.

Meanwhile, three US aircraft carriers are joining a combined exercise with the South Korean Navy in the East Sea in a show of force against North Korea.

The four-day maneuvers, which will end Tuesday, are known to include a simulated precision attack on mock North Korean facilities.

It marks the first massive joint drills since Seoul and Washington agreed last month to enhance rotational deployments of US strategic assets to curb North Korea's nuclear and missile threats. (Yonhap)
