A provincial government official will stand trial for smuggling and using methamphetamines, Seoul prosecutors said Thursday.

The 50-year-old, only identified by his last name Koo, is accused of working with a 40-year-old surnamed Lee to help their accomplice Choi illegally bring in some 10 grams of the banned substance from Thailand in April this year, according to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.

Koo is also accused of using the drugs a number of times.  


Lee faces charges that he worked with Koo to provide money to Choi so that he could obtain and deliver the drugs to them.

The prosecution said it had been tracking them down after Choi, who has already been serving a four-year jail term, told prosecutors about Koo and Choi. 

In a separate case, prosecutors have also indicted two brothers in their 20s and a 33-year-old accomplice on charges of smuggling marijuana from the United States via international mails.

They had the mails be delivered to a local errands service firm, to which the elder brother, only identified by his last name Oh, told his brother to go to pick up the parcel. They together smuggled 31 pen cartridges containing liquid marijuana on seven occasions from July and September, the prosecution said. The younger brother was not charged. (Yonhap)
