N. Korea designated as food-shortage nation again

Sept. 22, 2017 - 10:54 By Yonhap

The Food and Agriculture Organization has listed North Korea as one of 37 food-shortage nations in need of external assistance, a US broadcaster reported Friday.

North Korea's crop yields decreased due to severe droughts between April and June, and a shortage of water supplies for irrigation, the FAO's third-quarter report on the global food situation was quoted as saying by Voice of America. The report was released the previous day.

The North's food shortage amounts to 458,000 tons, the report said, adding that it should receive external aid and imports.

But the shortfall was down 33 percent from 685,000 tons a year ago, according to the report.

Of the 37 nations requiring outside assistance, 29 are from Africa, and seven, including the North, from Asia, the report said. (Yonhap)
