Multicultural families left out in election, as always

[1] South Korean society is becoming increasingly ethnically diverse, with the trend expected to increase in the coming decades.

But in elections, the voices of the small, but growing group of multiethnic voters continue to be muted or ignored.

*Ethnically diverse –
*Multiethnic –
*Coming decades –
*Mute – 음소거

[2] Facing tight schedules to the May 9 snap vote, candidates have all staked out their election pledges, but few have provided a clear vision on how to make Korea a more open and inclusive society for immigrants.

*Tight schedules –
*Snap vote –
*Stake out their election pledges –
*Inclusive –

[3] A look at the manifestos of five mainstream party-backed contenders, including front-runner Moon Jae-in, reveals their lack of concrete ideas on multiculturalism.

*Manifesto – 성명서
*Mainstream party-backed contenders–
*Back someone –
*Front-runner – 1
*Lack of concrete ideas –

[4] All five promises increased support for multicultural families, but their focus is limited to such agendas like how to tackle domestic violence within multicultural families or reduce school dropout rates of multicultural students.

*Tackle –

The Merciless is a bromance with style

[1] Style was what director Byun Sung-hyun wanted to focus on when filming “The Merciless,” which has been invited to the midnight category at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, taking place from May 17-28.

“The reason I paid so much attention to mise-en-scene is because in Korean cinema in recent years, there have been, and there will continue to be, so many crime movies led by two male characters,” said Byun at a press preview of the film in Wangsimni, Seoul, Tuesday. “I wanted to differentiate my film through style.”

*Differentiate -

[2] Meticulous camerawork is prominent in the director’s snazzy piece, starring veteran actor Seol Kyung-gu (“Lucid Dream,” 2017) as criminal gang leader Han Jae-ho and Im Si-wan (“One Line,” 2016) as the reckless young delinquent Jo Hyun-soo.

*Meticulous –
*Reckless young delinquent –
