LG CNS와 시스코 임원들이 이달 초 한국의 스마트 시티(Smart City) 구축을 위한 회의를 가졌다고 알려져 그 배경에 관심이 쏠리고 있다.

지난주 시카고에서 열린 IoT World Forum에 참석한 한 시스코 임원은 “약 2주전 LG CNS의 임원들과 만나 IoT사업의 협력방안에 대해서 논의 했다,”고 코리아헤럴드에 밝혔다.

그는 또한 LG CNS와의 협력이 송도와 같은 새로운 스마트 시티를 건설하는 것 보다는 “기존의 도시에 스마트 기술을 접목하는 것이 될 수도 있을 것,”이라고 덧붙였다.

회동은 김대훈 LG CNS사장과 존 챔버스 시스코 회장간에 이루어졌을 것으로 예상되고 있다.

LG CNS측은 만남을 부인하며 현재로서는 스마트 시티 공동 사업 계획이 없다고 밝혔다. 지난 상반기에 두 업체는 클라우드 서비스 관련 MOU건으로 만난 바가 있다.

시스코는 미국 캘리포니아주 산호세에 본사를 두고 있는 세계 최대의 네트워킹 회사이며 한국의 지자체와 기업들과는 인연이 깊은 기업이다.

시스코는 포스코E&C와 LG CNS등 국내 기업들과 함께 2009년부터 인천 송도국제도시에 네트워크 인프라 구축에 참여를 해오고 있으며 인천경제자유구역에도 인천광역시와 함께 네트워크 구축 사업을 하고 있다.

LG CNS, Cisco to co-develop smart city


CEO meets Cisco officials for collaboration plans


The leading Korean IT services firm LG CNS is in talks with networking giant Cisco to collaborate on their Internet of Things businesses.

“We met executives from LG CNS to discuss collaboration for IoT businesses around two weeks ago,” said an official from Cisco, indicating that the two companies plan to work together on building smart infrastructure in a South Korean city .

The official did not specify the exact location but said the project could be aimed at transforming a city into a smart city.

Some industry officials speculated that Kim Dae-hoon, the chief executive of LG CNS met Cisco chairman John Chambers in the U.S. during his recent visit.

However, LG CNS denied the reports, saying that it has not yet started such talks.

An official from the Korean IT solutions provider did admit, however, that Kim had conducted meetings with Cisco officials in the first half of this year to fine tune the details of their recent deal for cloud services, announced in August.

Chambers said at Cisco’s annual IoT World Forum held in Chicago last week that the U.S. networking giant would maintain a solid business relationships with Korean partners such as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics.

The California-based company has long been working hand in hand with Korean companies and municipal governments here in developing smart cities.

Partnering with POSCO E&C, a South Korean construction firm, and LG CNS, Cisco in 2011 had pledged to invest up to $47 million to establish networks in skyscrapers located in Songdo International Business District.

Cisco’s global R&D center, called the Global Center of Excellence, is housed in the headquarters of POSCO E&C in Songdo.

Cisco is also working side by side with Incheon Metropolitan City to deploy a high-speed network technology and to support sustainable economic development in Incheon Free Economic Zone.
