L.A에서 뉴 멕시코로 가는 비행중 승객 한명이 심장 마비로 쓰러졌으나 스튜어디스는 가슴털이 너무 많다는 이유로 응급조치를 거부했다고 미러 뉴스가 보도했다. 

잭 조단 (62)는 부인과 함께 L.A에서 뉴 멕시코로 가는 비행중 갑작스러운 심장 마비로 쓰러졌다. 같은 비행기에 탑승했던 간호사와 물리 치료사가 달려와 CPR (심폐소생술)을 지시했으며 다른 한명의 승객은 세동제거기를 사용하라는 의견도 내놓았다.

하지만 응급상황에 비행기에 있는 세동제거기를 사용해야할 의무가 있는 스튜어디스는 승객의 가슴에 털이 너무 많다는 이유로 세동제거기 사용을 거부했다. 결국 털을 밀고 세동제거기를 사용했으나 너무 늦은 조치 때문에 잭 조단은 결국 숨을 거두게 되었다. 

“나는 항공기 관계자들 또는 스튜어디스들이 의사의 전문지식이 있을거라고 생각 안한다. 기대하지도 않는다. 하지만 이런 응급상황에서 적어도 노력을 해야 한다고 생각한다. 세동제거기를 갖다 대기만 했으면 됐다. 이런 일이 다른 사람들에게 앞으로 일어나지 않았으면 좋겠다.” 리고 조단 부인이 한 매체와의 인터뷰에서 밝혔다. 

항공기 측에서는 매우 유감스럽다는 말과 함께 스튜어디스들이 모두 응급조치에 대한  트레이닝을 받는다고 했다. 이 사건에 대해 더  조사할 계획이라는 말도 함께 전했다.

Flight attendant refuses defibrillator to dying man citing his hairy chest

A flight attendant refused to use a defibrillator on a passenger suffering from cardiac arrest on a flight from L.A. to New Mexico, according to Mirror News. 

Jack Jordan, 62, who was on a plane with his wife, suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest. A nurse and a physiotherapist who were one the same plane “stepped in to administer CPR” while another passenger suggested to use a defibrillator that was on-board. 

However, the flight attendant, who is actually responsible for such emergencies, refused to use the defibrillator saying he had too much hair on his chest. They eventually shaved his hair and used the defibrillator but it was too late to save him. 

“I don’t expect flight attendants to be experts like doctors, but they should at least try to help a dying man. They should have hooked up the defibrillator. I don’t want somebody else to have to go through something like this,“ his wife was quoted as saying.

A spokesperson for the airline said that “they are deeply sorry for the loss of the passenger.” She also added that “all their flight attendants are trained for emergencies, but they are going to look further into this incident.”
