영국의 한 학교가 급식비를 늦게 냈다는 이유로 5세 아이 학생에게 물과 빵만 줬다고 데일리 메일이 보도했다.
영국 리버풀에 위치한 이 초등학교는 급식비를 다섯 시간 늦게 냈다는 이유로 급식비를 안 받고 친구들과 떨어진 곳에서 빵과 물만 줬다고 한다.
학교 측은 아이에게 다른 아이들과 똑같은 급식을 줬다고 반박했지만 아이의 할머니, 셰일라 슬레이터는 그렇지 않다고 주장했다.
“손주는 5살이라 왜 친구들과 떨어진 곳에서 빵과 물만 먹어야하는지 이해를 못할 나이다. 초라한 급식을 먹은 후 다음날 등교 때 오늘도 친구들과 떨어져 밥을 먹어야 하냐고 물었다”라고 슬레이터가 불만을 토로했다.
슬레이터에 의하면 급식비 마감일이 금요일인데 금요일 몇 시 까지 인지 제대로 써놓지 않았다고 한다. 아이의 엄마가 아침에 급식비를 가져가는 것을 잊어버려 데리러 갈 때 급식비를 내려고 했으나 시간이 지나 돈을 못 받겠다고 학교 측에서 말했다고 한다.
학교 측에서는 입금 관련된 문제에 오해가 있었다고 하고 앞으로 이런 일이 일어나지 않도록 노력하겠다고 밝혔다. 부모님들이 급식비를 내는 것을 잊어버릴 것에 대비해 해당 학생에게 조금 더 간단한 급식을 준다고 한다. 해당 학생이 창피할까봐 다른 학생들과 떨어진 곳에서 밥을 먹게 하는 것도 사실이나 그날 학교 관계자의 실수로 슬레이터 손자에게는 평소대로 먹던 급식을 줬다고 하고 빵과 물만 줬다는 것은 사실이 아니라고 강조했다.

The deadline for the payment was Friday but the school didn’t mention what time. As the mother of the boy tried to pay Friday afternoon, the school turned it down and said they couldn’t take it because it was five hours late, according to Slater.
The school responded that there was a misunderstanding with the payment system and that they will work to improve it so this problem won’t come up again. They also mentioned that the students whose parents forgot to pay were given a more simple lunch and made to eat somewhere else in case they might get embarrassed.
But on that day, a teacher made a mistake and gave Slater’s grandson the same meal as usual and not bread and water.
