Education officials said Thursday they are investigating a high school teacher who allegedly gambled with students.

The 48-year-old teacher, whose identity was withheld, allegedly played traditional card games with five students for an hour during a field trip last month, according to the North Gyeongsang Province Office of Education.

Officials said the teacher had initially tried to persuade the students to go to sleep. But when they refused, he started gambling to “soothe” them.

The students’ parents found out about the misdemeanor, reported it the authorities and called for disciplinary actions against the teacher.

막장 교사, 수학여행서 학생들과 도박판!


수학여행 인솔 교사가 고교생들과 함께 도박을 한 사실이 뒤늦게 밝혀져 경북도교육청이 진상조사에 나섰다.

14일 경북도교육청 등에 따르면 성주군 모 고교의 학생부장 A교사(48)는 지난달 23일 밤 강원도 설악산 숙소에서 고교생 5명과 속칭 ‘섰다’ 도박을 했다.

A교사는 순찰을 하다가 도박 중인 고교생들을 발견해 잠을 자도록 종용했으나 말을 듣지 않자 달래는 차원에서 함께 도박을 한 것으로 알려졌다.

A교사와 학생들은 수천~수만원의 판돈을 걸고 1시간여 동안 도박을 한 것으로 파악됐다.

이 학교의 중 1ㆍ2학년생 및 고 1ㆍ2학년생 58명, 인솔교사 6명(교감 포함)은 지난달 22-24일 용인 에버랜드와 설악산 등으로 수학여행을 다녀왔다.

이 같은 사실을 뒤늦게 안 학부모는 지난 13일 경북도교육청에 제보와 함께 해당 교사의 징계를 요구했다.

경북도교육청 감사담당관실 조기정 감사기획담당은 “학부모 제보를 받고 학교에 경위서 제출을 요구했다”면서 “진상조사를 한 뒤 징계 여부를 결정하겠다”고 말했다.
