South Koreans were shocked by the news of the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il on Monday, with some voicing concern over potential escalation of tensions on the peninsula.
At noon, North Korea's state media (North) Korean Central News Agency announced the country's leader died of a heart attack during a train ride early Saturday.
The surprise news of the death of 69-year-old Kim, who ruled the communist nation since his father and national founder Kim Il-sung died in 1994, sent shock waves throughout the South.
Groups of people gathered in front of televisions in public places nationwide, with others glued to their hand-held smartphones as television broadcasters aired the breaking news.
"I am bewildered. I still can't believe it," Eom Yun-mo, a 38-year-old man, said as he waited for a train at Seoul Station.
"Speculation over his death has circulated frequently, but this seems to be the first time his death has been confirmed." He added, "I am worried there may be more turbulences than when Kim Il-sung died."
A military officer cautiously voiced concern over the potential outbreak of military clashes on the peninsula. "The military will likely step up their vigilance on the border. I hope as a solider that this will not lead to a military provocation like the Cheonan attack or Yeonpyeong Island bombing," the Army service member said, identifying himself only by his surname, Kim.
"It's unbelievable news, still," 56-year-old man named Lee Chung-ho said. "But I expect that the death of Kim Jong-il will hopefully bring unification (of the two Koreas) one step closer."
The news became the main subject of lunch conversation among local office workers speculating on the future direction of the communist country, now expected to be led by heir-apparent son Jong-un.
"I am totally shocked by the death," Yeo Min-hye said, during her lunch break. "My colleagues are also unsettled. (I believe) This will not lead to a war, but could prompt tensions," she said.
A local advocacy group for South Korean abductees to the communist country expressed worries over a potential commotion within the North, calling for the South to continue efforts to repatriate South Koreans kidnapped by the North over past decades.
"I am concerned that the death of Kim Jong-il could trigger a power struggle in the North and disturb the country," Choi Seong-yong, chairman of the Abductees' Family Union, told Yonhap News Agency over the phone. "In the short term, attention should be focused on future moves (by the North), especially on the succession process of Kim Jong-un, the successor and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, as well as Jang Song-thaek of the ruling Workers' Party."
Although Kim's death is likely to prompt significant changes in the North, the South Korean government should keep paying attention to our efforts to bring abducted South Koreans back home even after the power succession, Choi said.

북한 김정일 국방위원장의 사망 소식에 시민들은 충 격에 휩싸인 채 불안한 표정으로 TV 화면에서 눈을 떼지 못했다.
특히 김 위원장의 사망 뉴스가 아무런 예고 없이 갑자기 나온 탓에 시민에게 미 친 충격파는 더 컸다.
◇ "믿기 힘들다" 충격 = 사망 소식이 전해진 직후인 19일 낮 12시30분께 서울 역 대합실에서는 곳곳에 설치된 TV 앞에 수십명씩이 모여들어 숨죽이며 화면을 주시 했다. 휴가를 나온 군인들도 걱정스러운 표정으로 뉴스를 지켜봤다.
영문을 모른 채 대합실을 지나던 시민들도 무슨 뉴스인지를 알고 나서는 충격적 이라는 반응을 보이며 TV 앞에서 가던 길을 멈췄다.
일부 시민은 대기석에 앉아 스마트폰으로 김 위원장 사망 관련 뉴스나 SNS(소셜 네트워크서비스)를 찾아보기도 했다.
대합실에 있던 엄윤모(38)씨는 "얼떨떨하다. 아직 믿어지지 않는다. 사망설이야 자주 나왔지만 공식적으로 확인된 것은 이번이 처음이지 않나. 김일성 사망 당시보 다 더 혼란이 올 것 같아 걱정이다"라고 말했다.
강원도 양구에서 근무하는 육군 장병 김모(22)씨는 "군의 경계 태세 강화가 지 속할 것 같다. 군인으로서 천안함 사태나 연평도 포격 같은 도발 사태가 발생하지 않기를 바란다"고 말했다.
◇ 점심 식당가 '술렁' = 평소대로 월요일 오전 업무를 보던 직장인들은 대부분 점심을 하러 나왔다가 김정일 사망 뉴스를 접했다.
식당에 모인 직장인들도 걱정스러운 표정을 지으며 "북한은 이제 어떻게 되는 거야"라며 술렁였다. 식사 대화 주제도 김 위원장 사망 소식으로 채워졌다.
서울 대치동의 한 식당에서 만난 오동훈(50.컨설턴트)씨는 "충격이다. 북한은 이유 없이 연평도를 공격하는 자들이다. 어떻게 나올지 몰라 걱정이다"라고 말했다.
대기업에 다니는 여민혜(23.여)씨는 "사망 소식을 듣고 엄청 놀랐다. 지금 점 심때인데 조금 전부터 다들 술렁거리고 있다. 전쟁까지는 아니지만 긴장상태가 되지 않겠나 싶다"고 말했다.
◇ 안보 위기 '걱정' = 충격적인 뉴스 속에 일부 시민은 극도의 불안감을 표출 하기도 ?다.
서울 종로에서 근무하는 회사원 최모(29)씨는 "사실 너무 무섭다. 점심 먹으면 여권부터 갱신하러 갈 생각이다. 김일성 사망 당시 물을 사두려고 난리가 났던 기억 이 난다"고 말했다.
서울 삼성동에서 만난 공인회계사 신모(40)씨는 "북한 권력이 불안정한 상태인 데 불확실성이 더 커지는 것 아닌가. 당장 둘째 아이 출산을 앞두고 있는데 안보가 걱정되는 것이 사실"이라고 불안감을 털어놨다.
TV 속보를 보고 사망소식을 들었다는 은행원 김모(27.여)씨는 "오전에 주가가 특별한 이유 없이 떨어져 외부 요인이 없는지 체크하던 중이었다. 동료 사이에서는 사재기를 해야 하는 것 아니냐는 얘기도 나왔다"고 말했다.
◇ "한반도 평화가 최우선" = 한반도 평화를 위해 정부가 적극적으로 주변국과 협력해야 한다는 목소리도 나왔다.
회사원 김상철(57)씨는 "경제가 침체기인데 사회까지 혼란스러워지면 더 악영향 을 미치는 게 아닐까 걱정된다"면서도 "이럴 때일수록 정부와 사회 구성원들이 흔들 리지 말고 각자 역할을 충실히 해줘야 한다"고 말했다.
회사원 이모(43)씨는 "김정일 사후 북한에 대한 중국의 영향력이 커질 것이라는 이야기를 들었다. 외교 역량을 발휘해 한반도 평화 체제를 구축하는 일이 제일 시급 하다고 생각한다"고 말했다.
장범진(75)씨는 "사인이 정확히 규명되지 않아 아직 의심 가는 부분이 많다. 우 리나라가 아직 준비가 덜 된 상태에서 김정일이 사망한 만큼 독자적인 대응보다는 미국 등 주변국들과의 협조가 필요하다"고 제언했다.
회사원 김성희(38)씨는 "어제 뉴스보니 미국이 북한에 쌀 지원 얘기가 있던데 북한은 이빨 빠진 호랑이다. 김일성 사망 때도 그냥 지나갔다. 여태까지 그래왔던 것처럼 분위기가 흘러갈 것이고 큰 영향은 없을 것"이라고 전망하기도 했다.
고속터미널에서 만난 이충호(56)씨는 "김정일 사망으로 통일이 한 걸음 더 다가 오지 않았나 기대해 본다"고 말했다.
