WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- The wayward penguin known as ``Happy Feet'' is missing in the Southern Ocean.
Experts tell The Associated Press the most likely scenario is that the emperor penguin's satellite transmitter fell off. The small unit was attached to his feathers with super glue and was designed to fall off when he molted early next year.
But the unit stopped transmitting Friday, just five days after the penguin was released into the sea south of New Zealand.
Other possibilities are that Happy Feet was eaten by an orca or a leopard seal; that he died of natural causes; or that the transmitter malfunctioned.
The aquatic bird was discovered on a New Zealand beach in June. He became sick from eating sand which he likely mistook for snow, but was nursed back to health over two months at the Wellington Zoo. Veterinarians repeatedly flushed his stomach to remove sand and fattened him up on a diet of fish.
After he was released from the deck of a research vessel, Happy Feet's satellite tracker showed that he swam in a meandering route, ending up about 75 miles (120 kilometers) southeast of where he began when the last transmission was received Friday morning. Experts say his looping pattern was typical for a penguin chasing fish.
Kevin Lay, a consultant at the company Sirtrack which attached the tracking device, said staff have gone over diagnostics from the tracker and it appears it was functioning well until the last transmission.
Lay said the tracker needs to be above the water's surface to transmit. Because penguins surface regularly to breathe, that hadn't proved a problem until Friday.
``We think the most likely scenario is tag detachment,'' Lay said. ``The intention was always that the transmitter would fall off.''
That's the scenario favored by Peter Simpson, a program manager at New Zealand's department of conservation.
``Who knows? He's probably swimming along quite happily without a transmitter on his back,'' Simpson said.
``I'm still confident we did the right thing by releasing him back into the wild,'' Simpson added. ``He's a marine bird and he's designed to swim and he's designed to live in the ocean.''
Scientists say there's an outside possibility they may again hear from Happy Feet. The penguin also has been fitted with a transponder chip under his skin, similar to those used to identify household cats and dogs. The chip will be activated if the penguin turns up near certain monitored emperor colonies in Antarctica.
Because Happy Feet is believed to be about 3 years old, it could be a year or two before he would arrive in an Antarctic colony to breed _ if he is still alive.
New Zealand penguin expert Colin Miskelly said it's time to face facts.
``It's unlikely that we will ever know what caused the transmission to cease,'' Miskelly wrote on his blog. ``But it is time to harden up to the reality that the penguin has returned to the anonymity from which he emerged.''

서트랙의 케빈 레이는 지난 9일 오전 마지막 송신을 접수했을 때도 위성 추적 장치는 정상적으로 작동하고 있었다며 해피 피트는 그 당시 사람들이 놓아준 곳에서 남동쪽으로 115km 떨어진 곳을 이동하고 있었다고 설명했다.
레이는 "그 같은 상황으로 미루어 볼 때 송신 두절은 위성 추적 장치가 몸에서 떨어져 바다에 가라앉아버렸거나 알 수 없는 사건으로 해피 피트가 더 이상 바다 위 로 떠오를 수 없게 된 것으로 보인다"고 말했다.
그는 위성 추적 장치가 털에 강력 접착제로 부착돼 있기 때문에 해가 바뀌어 털 갈이를 할 때까지는 떨어지지 않게 돼 있다면서 "그러나 야생 상태에서는 어쩌다 그 냥 떨어져 나갔을 가능성도 완전히 배제할 수는 없다."고 말했다.
그는 또 해피 피트가 다른 큰 동물에게 잡혀먹혔을 가능성도 배제할 수 없다면 서 "어쩌면 그런 것이 이 세상이 돌아가는 법칙인지도 모른다."고 말했다.
서트랙은 송신 두절과 관련한 성명에서 남극에 영향을 미치는 태양면 폭발 플레 어가 위성 추적 장치의 송신을 교란하고 있을 가능성도 없지는 않지만 다른 위성 추 적 장치들은 아무런 문제도 발생하지 않고 있다고 밝혔다.
이 밖에도 가능성은 낮지만 송신 장치가 기계 고장을 일으키거나 파손됐을 수도 있는 것으로 추정되고 있다.
뉴질랜드 자연보호부의 피터 심슨은 해피 피트가 야생 동물들에 대한 일반인들 의 관심을 높이는 데 큰 몫을 했다며 그를 바다로 되돌려 보낸 것은 결과가 어찌됐 든 잘한 일이라고 말했다.
지난 6월 중순 뉴질랜드 웰링턴 부근 페카페카 해변에서 발견된 해피 피트는 모 래를 먹는 등 이상 행동을 보이며 건강이 크게 악화됐으나 웰링턴 동물원 당국이 수 술비 등으로 3만여 달러를 쓰며 극진하게 보살핀 덕에 완전히 건강을 되찾은 뒤 바 다로 되돌려 보내졌었다.
