GWANGJU, Aug. 9 (Yonhap) -- Police said Tuesday that a Vietnamese woman married to a South Korean man has been booked without detention on charges of attempting to poison her mother-in-law.
Last week, the 23-year-old suspect, whose name is withheld, allegedly put poison in food she had prepared for her mother-in-law in her home in Gwangju, some 330 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the Gwangju Nambu Police Station.
The suspect, who came from the Southeast Asian country in 2008 to marry the unidentified man, told police that she was often ignored and verbally abused by her South Korean mother.
The murder attempt, however, failed as the 69-year-old mother realized beforehand that the meal was contaminated, police said, without elaborating.

광주 남부경찰서는 9일 음식에 독약을 타 시어머니를 살해하려 한 혐의(존속살해 미수)로 베트남 이주여성 A(23)씨를 불구속 입건했다.
경찰에 따르면 A씨는 지난 5일 오전 10시께 광주 남구 자신의 집에서 시어머니(69)에게 독약을 넣은 밥을 먹여 살해하려 한 혐의를 받고 있다.
2008년 한국으로 시집온 A씨는 평소 시어머니가 무시하고 욕설을 한다는 이유로이 같은 짓을 저지른 것으로 드러났다.
A씨의 범행은 시어머니가 독약을 탄 사실을 눈치채면서 미수에 그쳤다.
A씨의 시어머니는 곧바로 경찰에 신고했으나 며느리가 용서를 구하자 선처를 요청한 것으로 알려졌다. (연합뉴스)
